Aims, contents and method of the course

The lecture offers an overview of "The Church in the course of 1000 years between 450 and 1450 A.D." and is held as a lecture with readings and discussion:
I. Until 600 A.D. (Migration period; Synod of Orange 529; Benedictine monasticism; Boethius; Cassiodor; Dionysius Exiguus; Gregor the Gr.; Fulgentius of Ruspe; Isidor of Seville)
II to 750 A.D. (Ascent of the Carolingians; Ascent of Islam; Concilium Germanicum; Irish and Anglo-Saxon Mission; Boniface)
III to 900 A.D. (Charlemagne/Carolingian; Saxon mission; Carolingian reform; Adoptianism dispute; Eucharist dispute; Predestination dispute; Debate about filioque; Alkuin; Paulus Diaconus; Einhard; Hrabanus Maurus)
IV. Up to 1000 (Ottonians; Ottonian "imperial church system"; Cluny monastery; Gorze monastery; Mission; Widukind von Corvey)
V. Until 1300 A.D.; High Middle Ages (Investiture Controversy I; 1054 Schisma; Crusades; New Orders; Scholasticism; Papacy, the Lateran Councils and Investiture Controversy II)

In addition to the lecture, source texts and secondary literature on the moodle platform offer material for reworking and self-study.
The lecture is evaluated with 4 ECTS (1 ECTS = 25 h working time):
The attendance of the lecture (about 14 units of 1.5 h) or respective own reading results in (just) 1 ECTS.
The lecture is accompanied by further reading tasks (per unit/topic both source texts and secondary literature [about one essay of 10-20 p.)], which serve to deepen and secure what has been heard (about 3-4 h = 2 ECTS).
Exam preparation: 1 ECTS.

Assessment and permitted materials

The examination is carried out in the form of an oral examination (20 min.); no aids are allowed.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students should be able to name and describe central topics and developments in response to generalizing questions about the lecture material. A subject area can be chosen as a starting point.

Examination topics

The students gained an in-depth insight into the events, developments and themes of the history of Christianity between 450 and 1450 AD.
This lecture material is the examination material.
