Aims, contents and method of the course
Content of the seminary is reading, discussing and comparing Sumerian Laments and Laments in the Hebrew Bible. In addition to that, the biblical book of Lamentations will be interpreted in its innerbiblical context, in rabbinic literature and in modern Israel (remembering the Shoa).
Assessment and permitted materials
- participation in the seminary
- preparation of biblical and other texts with commentaries
- written exegesis of a text from Lamentations: in comparison to a sumerian lamentation, another biblical text or a rabbinic interpretation (about 5-10 pages)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Participation in all 3 parts of the seminar (preparatory sessions in Vienna, Joint Classroom in Jerusalem and seminary with Prof. Dr. Yair Zakovitch in Vienna) is required (maximum 1 absence at a preparatory meeting). A positive grade of the written exegesis is essential for a positive evaluation of the seminar.
