Aims, contents and method of the course

Topics of this seminar are medical interventions that go beyond the therapy for diseases. Such possibilities are discussed under the concept of enhancement and describe cosmetic surgery, neuro-enhancement, forms of preimplantation genetic diagnosis, antiaging medicine and more. The extension of medical possibilities beyond the therapy of diseases changes the tasks of medicine and the way we live. This new role of medicine and its implication for our individual and social life will be discussed in the seminar. Moreover, it will be examined how our understanding of disease and health are changing.

The target of this seminar is to gain an overview over the cutting edge technologies and research in medicine beyond therapy and about the social and ethical implications.
