Aims, contents and method of the course

Migration and Health: Sociological, ethical and legal parameters of health care for migrants with legal status and for irregular migrants, of migration-specific impacts on health and migration specific intercultural issues: Overviewing different types of migration, legal frameworks and on relevant themes of current migration research; Access to health care for migrants in transit countries (diseases, primary health care, health care actors, legal protection); Life in Europe without a legal status (public health care and parallel structures; differences across national health systems; possibilities and limits of European harmonisation; state and NGOs as health care providers); Administrative detention as a factor that contributes to illness ("vulnerability" in the view of migrants and in political and administrative practice); Health policies for migrants and it's relation to integration policy; Health care and highly qualified migrants; Tensions between human rights claims and national law; The seminar programme foresees an excursion to discuss health care policies with a group of migrants.

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Becoming acquainted with the area of migration and health. Overview on current research and central research questions. Sociological analysis based on research data and case studies. Ethical and legal reflection. Discussion of policy development.

Examination topics

discussion, interactive methods, text analysis, analysis of date from recent research and personal records of migrants.
