Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The PUE Case Studies in Roman Property Law offers a comprehensive and accessible introduction to Roman Law and the foundations of the Civilian tradition. It provides an introduction to the basic principles, concepts, and modes of thought and argumentation of Roman Law. In addition, the course offers active training in the solution of cases based on Roman Property Law, as well as the exegesis (explication and discussion) of ancient Roman sources.The course aims to acquaint students with the historical foundations of modern private property law within the (European) Civil Law tradition and gives a comprehensive introduction to the relevant terminology in English.The class is aimed at students in their first year of the IREWI programme. While not mandatory, it is highly recommended as targeted preparation for the written MP Roman Law and the Civilian Tradition at the end of the first year.
Assessment and permitted materials
Students are expected to attend all sessions. However, two unexcused absences are allowed.Students will be graded based on two written exams (each 45 minutes) and active class participation.Please note that you will not be allowed to use any books, lecture notes, or other study aids during the exams. The use of a bilingual dictionary is permitted, however, no specialised legal dictionaries will be allowed for the exams.

Examination topics
The relevant chapters of the required reading (Benke/Meissel, Roman Law of Property, 2nd ed., 2024) are to be prepared prior to the respective sessions.All the topics and materials covered in the course of the semester may be subject to the exams.
