Aims, contents and method of the course

The course provides detailed insights in problems of international law respectively the history of international law. It covers all eras of global history from ancient times until the 21st century. Studying (legal) sources will be a key element during the course lessons.

ERASMUS-Students are always welcome at the course!

Assessment and permitted materials

Two written exams.

Alternatively, ERASMUS-Students can take an oral exam in English or German.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The grade is based on the two exams.

There is also the possibility of improvement through a voluntary reading assignment.

Examination topics

The course is about the history of international law from its beginnings to the present and strives to take a global historical perspective. The essential epochs and institutes of both state practice and international law scholarship will be addressed. This is done first from a legal perspective, but also taking into account insights from general history, political science, philosophy, and sociology.
