Aims, contents and method of the course
Demographic conditions (population share of Muslims in Europe in past and present); Basics of the History of Islam; legal standing of Christians and Jews under Islamic rule (meaning of the concept of tolerance); legal standing of "heterodox" under Christian rule; legal positions regarding intermarriages; reception of the Euro-American human rights discourse on the Islamic side; Turkey - an "Islamic" State? Act on the Recognition of the Adherents of Islam as a Religious Community (Islamgesetz 1912); Act on External Legal Relationships of Islamic Religious Societies (Islamgesetz 2015; including Amendment 2021!); further legal developments in an European comparison.
Assessment and permitted materials
Participation in class; Collaboration in class; Voluntary written interim exam around the middle of the semester (concerning the material of the first script); Written final exam on the material of both scripts (alternatively, digital oral colloquium possible). The result of the midterm exam will be credited - based on the material of the first script - in accordance with the principle of favorability.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Compulsory attendance (please do not miss more than three times!); Collaboration in class; positive completion of the final exam or the alternative oral digital colloquium. One third of the evaluation of the collaboration is used, and two thirds of the grade from the final exam or the oral digital colloquium is used to determine the final grade. Alternatively, oral digital colloquia appointments can be held until the end of July.
Please note regarding the final exam or final colloquium: The two scripts contain question catalogs with a TOTAL of 20 questions or question blocks. Eight questions will be asked, of which you can choose four.

Two course-documents will be made avalable for the students via the Moodle-platform. These contain further references. However, the referenced literature is not directly relevant for the colloquium.
