Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Course Objective:
The aim of this course is to equip students with both fundamental and advanced skills in academic writing within the field of law. Students will learn how to independently and systematically compose academic papers, develop precise arguments, and correctly research and cite scholarly sources.

Course Content:
Throughout the course, students will become familiar with the essential aspects of academic writing in legal studies, including:
- Topic Selection and Refinement: How to choose a relevant academic topic and formulate a precise research question.
- Methods: What are legal methods, and how are they applied?
- Academic Research and Source Criticism: How to efficiently conduct research in legal databases and libraries? How to assess sources in terms of their relevance and quality?
- Citation Techniques and Plagiarism Prevention: Proper citation according to established standards and strategies for avoiding plagiarism.
- Development and Structuring of Argumentation Chains: How to construct a compelling and logical argument?
- Use of Software and Artificial Intelligence: The targeted use of tools such as ChatGPT, citation software, and other resources to support the writing process.

Methodology:
The course is structured through a combination of practice-oriented exercises, individual writing processes, and collaborative discussions. Students will learn interactively by working on their own academic projects (e.g., seminar papers, theses, journal articles) while receiving targeted support. Group and individual feedback sessions will help them articulate and defend their ideas and arguments effectively. In-class exercises will facilitate the initial stages of academic writing.

Tools such as ChatGPT and other software solutions are encouraged and should be integrated into the writing process. The goal is not only to teach students the craft of academic writing but also to demonstrate how modern technologies can be productively and responsibly incorporated into their work. The course follows the structure of a guided writing group.

Assessment and permitted materials

As part of the course, students must complete several partial requirements: active participation in the sessions, min. one short presentation (max. 10 minutes), and the maintenance of a writing journal, the exact requirements of which will be explained in the preliminary meeting.

The topic of the written work can be chosen freely but must have a clear legal connection. Students can either work on an ongoing writing project (such as a seminar paper or thesis) or start a new writing project.

Artificial intelligence may and should be used—provided it is applied ethically and in accordance with academic standards.

If possible, please always bring a laptop or tablet to the session in addition to paper and a pen!
