Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Objectives:
Practising culturally sensitive intervention strategies for mediation.
Expand personal intercultural and transcultural competence.
Analyse the possible influence of culture(s) on the communication process.
Develop your own understanding of your role and attitude as a mediator.

Contents:
Mediation in intercultural / culturally sensitive contexts
Ethical questions of mediation, in particular understanding of roles
Attitude of mediators, self-image and human image in mediation
Stereotypes / prejudices / minorities / majorities / power / culturalisation of conflicts and acculturation strategies
Cultural concepts for mediation: value studies & cultural standard models
Results from research on intercultural interpersonal conflicts
Tools such as: Distinguishing between perceiving / interpreting / evaluating, intercultural conflict style test, working with value squares

Methods:
Theoretical and practical input from the course leader, individual, pair and small group exercises, cultural simulations, role plays, video analyses, case studies

Assessment and permitted materials
