Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The lecture gives an overview of legal history inside and outside Europe. It will cover a vast area of topics, epochs and problems: from the very beginning of law and society in ancient times over the Middle Ages to early modern and contemporary history. It includes lectures about enlightenment and absolutism; constitutionalization, authoritarianism and totalitarianism in the 19th and 20th century – as well as the attempts to prosecute crimes through international criminal law. It aims at a comparative and critical perspective on the history of law. Imperialism and colonialism have also their place here. We, the three lecturers, end with the decolonization, Europeanization and globalization of law in the post World War II era and present times.
Due to the CoV pandemic, it will be held in the form of a video conference. Questions are possible and welcome. "Breakout sessions" will enable group work and interaction in every unit.
