Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Today¿s biomedical ethics is internationally practiced on a high academic level. It has gained an established position within medicine, nursing, law, philosophy, ethics and social sciences. Anyone who wants to participate in this discourse has to know what topics are on the agenda and how to scientifically cope with them. this also applies for diploma theses and dissertations in biomedical ethics.
This course provides you with the opportunity to learn and practice the essential academic tools to work within this field on a state-of-the-art level. You will learn to use specific sources, elaborate on a central topic of biomedical ethics, and present it in a paper and a talk. The course is especially appropriate for those who think about writing a thesis or dissertation in biomedical ethics or want to qualify for participating in a research project in this field.

Assessment and permitted materials

* No unexcused no-show
* Delivery of small home excerices (e.g., searches in databases, reading & summarizing of an article, composing an abstract)
* Active participation during the course
> There will be no final/summative exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Participants of this course...
1. know which sources (esp. libraries, PubMed, ETHXWeb et al. database) they can use for their work and exploit them;
2. are able to develop a problem and associated argumentation;
3. know about the methodological spectrum of biomedical ethics;
4. are able to write an abstract in English and German about a pre-defined question;
5. are able to use computer resources (Microsoft Word & Power Point, EndNote) for their academic work;
6. are able to give a short presentation on this question (either in German or English)

Examination topics

Searching for material: demonstration by the lecturer, exercises for the participants
Using the internet platform BlackboardVista
Group work on developing and discussing the topic
Exercise of writing texts by using Microsoft Word and EndNote
Giving a presentation of a paper using Microsoft Power Point
Instruction by the lecturer
