Aims, contents and method of the course

The focus of these exercises will be on the discussion of central issues of contemporary international law on the basis of cases. The political background of these problems will also be explored. Active participation by students is required.
The following topics will be covered:
- the evolution and political foundations of international law
- the sources of international law
- states and intergovernmental organizations
- human and minority rights
- self-determination of peoples
- the prohibition of the use of force and non-intervention in internal affairs
- the peaceful settlement of disputes
- state responsibility

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

provide students with a deeper understanding of the special characteristics and the political background of public international law, enable them to work with the sources of international law, discuss key problems in areas of particular relevance, improve knowledge of legal English

Examination topics

discussion of key theoretical issues and important cases in the field of public international law, solution of ficticious cases in writing
