Aims, contents and method of the course

This short course will review some of the most important recent developments in the enforcement of international law, and will discuss some of the most pressing controversies concerning the implementation of international legal rules. The aim is to give students insight into the role played by international law’s rules and institutions in a number of the most prominent and pressing issues in international affairs today. The course will provide a contextual overview of the relevant international rules and will examine the distinctive ways in which they have been, and may yet be, applied in recent events. The course will begin with an introduction to enforcement mechanisms in international law, and then focus on in more depth on: (i) the practice of sanctions; (ii) countermeasures; (iii) inter-state dispute settlement; and (iv) advisory opinions of international courts and tribunals.
