Aims, contents and method of the course

Africa before and after the Berlin Congo Conference

November 15, 2024 marks the 140th anniversary of the Berlin Congo Conference, which played a prominent role in the "Scramble for Africa" and the division of the continent among the colonial powers of the time. The seminar takes this anniversary as a starting point to focus on the diverse history of African law, with a particular emphasis on the history of international law. However, the focus will not only be on the Congo Conference, including its prehistory, legal regulations and effects, but also on the interdependence of the continent, its inhabitants and its political entities on the continent itself and with other continents. Imperialism, colonialism and post-colonialism will also play a prominent role.

The seminar will take place in the summer semester as a block seminar on Monday, June 3 and Tuesday, June 4, 2024 in Vienna.

In the preliminary meeting on Tuesday, March 11, 9:30 a.m. as well as preparatory units in the coming months, a further thematic focus as well as the specification of the individual seminar topics will take place.

Assessment and permitted materials

You will be graded based upon a seminar paper (25–30 pages, 50,000 characters, including footnotes and spaces), your oral participation and presentation of a topic during the block seminar. During this session, the results of your own work should be presented and put up for discussion with a thesis paper (approx. 7 pages) and, if necessary, an excerpt from the source. The final version of your seminar paper must be submitted digitally as Word-format to nicole.schnalzer@univie.ac.at and in paper (2x).
