Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar will deal with the war waged by Russia against Ukraine and analyse whether genocide as defined in the 1948 Genocide Convention and human rights crimes as defined in the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) may have been committed, as well as examine whether and how suspects of such acts can be held accountable under international criminal law. In addition, relevant competences and possibilities of the EU bodies Eurojust, Europol and Genocide Network, of EU states in the fulfilment of their obligations under the ICC Statute, of the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine as well as of the Ukrainian law enforcement authorities will be examined.

In the course of the seminar, oral presentations of approx. 30 minutes supported by PowerPoint presentations or handouts will be given, which will be discussed in detail after the presentation. The topics of the presentations will be assigned in the preliminary meeting. After the seminar, there is the possibility to prepare written papers (at least 50,000 characters for diploma studies, 60,000 characters for dissertation studies) until the end of November 2023.

Assessment and permitted materials

4 ECTS are awarded for positively assessed oral presentations. Erasmus students who earn 4 ECTS for an oral presentation can also receive an additional 4 ECTS by submitting a written copy, but in this case no submission to the SSC and no application for approval is required.
