Aims, contents and method of the course

The course introduces the challenges facing law in a globalized world. While on the one hand, a harmonization of legal systems is taking place, on the other hand, a fragmentation and a clash of different legal cultures and normative systems can be observed. Starting with the colonial expansion of European law, the globalization of law will be examined historically and the question of how globalization and legal pluralism interact will be explored.

The course consists of lecture parts and reading parts, based on a reader that all participants receive. The texts are partly in English, partly in German.

Assessment and permitted materials

Short presentations and short written assignments. Although the working language of the course is German, it is possible to present and write in English.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The grade is based on regular active participation, the presentation, and the written work.

Examination topics

A reader will be provided via Moodle. Students will be expected to hold a presentation as part of their course participation.
