Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Participants in this course involve university students and inmates who participate in the weekly group meetings held at Vienna’s Simmering prison. Each meeting will kick off with a presentation by one participant on a criminological topic, followed by an open discussion. Topics in this course comprise a range of selected issues from the field of criminology and penitentiary law, both theoretical and practical. Research topics will be discussed and selected in the first session.

Assessment and permitted materials

Regular attendance, active participation, oral presentation, written Feedback/summary of the course.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The aim of this course is to explore a range of contemporary issues and enable communication and interaction between participants from diverse backgrounds. University students will have an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in a practical, ‘real world’ setting, experience the conditions and circumstances of prison life, and learn from the experience of inmates. For prison inmates, this course provides an opportunity to engage with university students and explore topics relevant to their offending and imprisonment. The course also serves to enhance communication, discussion, and social engagement.
