Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Once it was the border stone, today they are secured by high walls or sometimes invisible. In any case, borders fundamentally determine people's lives: they decide on identity and belonging, on political and economic rights, on freedom of movement and mobility. Who is allowed to cross them? Under what conditions and with what consequences?

The seminar deals with the phenomenon of the "border" from a legal and interdisciplinary perspective. A historical line will be drawn from the understanding of borders in antiquity to important contemporary issues. Concrete border conflicts are as much the subject of the seminar as the regulation of migration at borders.

Students are asked to give a presentation of 20-25 minutes and to prepare a handout with the main arguments and findings. The possibility to write diploma seminar papers (50,000 characters) is given. Doctoral students are also welcome.
