Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The primary aim of the course is to provide a general introduction to the history of the legal condition of Jews and Jewries from the 15th century to the present. Particular emphasis will be given to the legal condition of the Jews prior to their emancipation and the place of Jewish law in the legal pluralism of pre-modern Europe, the differen paths of Jewish emancipation in the 19th century, the role of international law for the protection of the rights of Jews and selected aspects of the contemporary public law of the State of Israel.
In terms of method the course is taught a) on the basis of concrete examples of "law in action" (norms, contracts, jurisdiction and administration) rather than "law in the books" and b) the assumption that the history of the legal positon of the Jews is of interest also for our undestanding of legal history in general.
