Aims, contents and method of the course

Basic knowledge is imparted, which is intended to provide an impetus not only for legal-historical but also for legal-political approaches. The main focus is, among other things: The trial of Jesus (excursus regarding ancient procedural law!); Activity of the ecclesiastical courts in the first and early second millennium; Introduction to the canonical procedural law of the Middle Ages; Peter Abelard and his border crossings; Beginnings of the inquisition process; Fighting heretics in medieval Austria; Witchcraft trials in the Middle Ages; Legal status of female "heretics" - insights into the history of procedural law with special consideration of the legal status of women; Trials in connection with the “Popesses” Wilhelmine and Mayfreda; Templar Trials; Trials against Master Eckart.

Assessment and permitted materials

Presence, Participation, voluntary interim colloquium during the semester and obligatory colloquium at the end of the course.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The grading calculation is roughly based on the following criteria: colloquium grade (counts for about two thirds), participation (counts for about a third).

Examination topics

The material for the final colloquium consists exclusively of the two scripts that will be posted on the Moodle platform over the course of the semester.

Reading list

There are numerous references to literature in both scripts. The referenced literature is not, as such, colloquial material, but can prove to be quite interesting for students.
