Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course examines the early history of the English Common Law. Following an introduction to the history of the
period, to the use of historical sources, and to writings on legal history – especially F.W. Maitland (see image) –
a combination of chronological and thematic approaches will be adopted. Both medieval documents and key works
of modern historical writing will be studied in order to obtain an overall picture of legal development.
