Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The emergence and cultivation of human rights and democracy are in some ways a success story - but at the same time they owe their existence to exemplary experiences of suffering and devastation. The course reconstructs the history of human rights since the end of the Middle Ages and shows which insights and processes have made them possible in their present form - as rights that people can claim against the state, which is obliged to guarantee them. Other important topics covered in the course are: the universal validity of human rights and the accusation of Eurocentrism; human rights, gender and sexuality; the human right to asylum; current challenges to human rights in times of "securitization" of societies in crisis (terrorism, pandemics).
