Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims: Students are familiar with the central questions of economic growth as well as with formal models that are used to address these questions.
Contents: The course covers the stylized facts of economic growth and the Solow-Swan model as well as various extensions of the latter. These extensions address technological progress, human capital formation, non-renewable resources and climate change, production externalities, and research and development.
Methods: Lectures, homework exercises, discussion.

Assessment and permitted materials

There will be two homework exercises and two tests. The tests will have open book format. For each homework exercise students can earn 10 points, for each test 25 points. To obtain a positive grade, it is necessary to earn at least 25 points on both test together and at least 35 points in total (both homework exercises plus both tests). Oral presentations of solutions to homework exercises and classroom participation yield extra points.

The course is based on Introducing Advanced Macroeconomics by H. J. Whitta-Jacobsen and P. B. Sørensen (Oxford University Press, 2022) and – to a lesser extent – on Introduction to Economic Growth by C. I. Jones and D. Vollrath (W. W. Norton & Company, 2013).
