Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course covers current issues in environmental economics, with a focus on how micro-econometric methods can be used to answer research questions in this field.

Selected topics include:

- Climate change
Estimating climate change damages; evaluating effects of climate policies.
- Local pollution (e.g. air and water pollution)
Estimating effects of local pollution on individuals and firms; environmental justice issues.
- Further environmental issues
Biodiversity; deforestation.

The course aims to provide students with an overview of the major questions and debates in environmental economics and a good understanding of how to use empirical tools from econometrics to address them. As the course has a strong empirical focus, knowledge of statistics and applied microeconometrics and basic knowledge of R, Stata or a similar statistical software are expected.

Assessment and permitted materials

The evaluation will be based on
- a final exam (40%),
- a take-home assignment (25%, can be done in R, Stata or a similar statistical software),
- a presentation of a paper in class (30%), and
- class participation (5%).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students should have a good background in microeconomics and empirical methods.

To pass the course, 50% across all parts of the course (not separately) are necessary.

Examination topics

All the material covered in class will be relevant for the final exam.
