Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course covers inequality topics in macroeconomics at the undergraduate level. After a short motivating introduction, we will first discuss how to measure inequality. Then, quite some time will be spent on the topic of inequality and growth. The rest of the course deals with inequality and business cycles, inequality and financial markets and inequality and labor markets. Student presentations will complement the topics discussed in class.

Assessment and permitted materials

Grades will be based on a written exam (40%), a presentation (20%) and discussion of a paper (10%), and problem sets (30%). A minimum of 50% of the total is necessary for passing the course.
Note that signing off the course is possible only 14th of October; a grade will be given to all participants still signed in after this date.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The goal of this course is to make students familiar with inequality issues in macroeconomics. After finishing it, students should be able to understand and discuss inequality issues in macroeconomics based on empirical facts and theoretical reasoning.

Examination topics

This course consists of two parts. In the first part, selected papers will be presented in a formal and rigorous way. Students are required to read the discussed literature and prepare problem sets (every Thursday lecture discussing selected paper(s), every Wednesday in following week discussion of problem set). The first part ends with a written exam. The second part consists of student presentations and discussions of further papers: every participant (individually or in groups depending on the total number of course participants) will i) prepare a paper from the provided reading list and present it in class and ii) discuss another paper in class during the presentation of the respective paper.

Reading list

Since no single textbook all topics adequately, the course will primarliy be based on journal articles. A detailed syllabus will be made available before the beginning of the course.
