Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course aims at providing students with a basic understanding of the fundamental rules of international trade law and the role of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Its basic principles will be described by reference to the respective articles in the trade agreements (in particular the GATT, GATS, and TRIPS) and case-law from the WTO dispute settlement system. The general exceptions (security, health, the environment,...) and the relationship between trade and investment will also be covered. After all, investment law has gained increasing attraction in recent years, in particular in connection with new free trade agreements such as NAFTA or CETA. A special session will be dedicated to the European Single Market.
