Aims, contents and method of the course
Aims: Students become familiar with the basic tools and models of microeconomic analysis. At the end of the semester, students are able to apply equilibrium analysis, the principles of optimizing behavior, and comparative statics to simple economic questions in the framework of perfectly competitive as well as monoplistic markets.Contents: Preferences and utility functions, utility maximization, demand function, substitution and income effects, equivalent and compensating variation; technology and production function, cost minimization, cost functions, profit maximization, supply function; perfectly competitive markets, demand and supply, competitive equilibrium, consumer and producer surplus, efficiency; monopoly, monopsony, price discrimination.Method: The news forum of the Moodle course provides regular information on the current learning goals and the development of the course. This is complemented with materials such as learning videos, online tests and exercises also available on the platform. An in-depth discussion of the contents is carried out in the lecture. Students are asked to prepare part of the contents in advance and to actively contribute to the discussions in class.
Assessment and permitted materials
Regular tests and assignements in the Moodle course, active participation in class or forum discussions, as well as three compulsory online exams.Exam dates:
- Midterm on Wednesday, 12 May 2021 from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m
- Midterm on Wednesday, 2 June 2021 from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m
- Final on Wednesday, 30 June 2021 from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The different assessments will contribute as follows to the final grade: each of the midterms 20 points, regular active participation 30 points (Moodle assignments 20, discussions 10), final exam 30 points.For a minimum passing grade students must participate in all three exams, obtain at least a total of 50 points in the course, of which at least 30 points must come from the exams.Grading will be as follows: 0-49% - fail; 50-59% - pass; 60-69% - satisfactory; 70-84% - good; 85-100% - very good.
