Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This seminar investigates different economic positions defended by different economists who taught economics at the University of Vienna. Their positions are regarded as special combinations of emprical theories explaining exchange and relative prices and methodological positions defining the structure of satisfactory explanantions in the theoretical social sciences. In particualr the positions developed by different representatives of the so called Austrian School of Economics will be contrasted to those developed by representatives of universalism. Also problems regarding the epistemological status of the theoretical social sciences will be discussed.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students are required to present one substantial talk (45 minutes) and contribute in a lively manner to discussions at all classes. Talks will be in English or german, each followed by a discussions. On the basis of their talks students will write a seminar paper which they hand in after the seminar has terminated. Grades can only be awarded if all requirements have been met successfully.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The aim of that seminar is to introduce students not only to the special history of economics at the University of Vienna but to the philosophy of economics and the social sciences in general. Diligent students will learn to make sense of and evaluate the historical background, achievements, main criticisms and later developments of controversies in economics which implictly still cover much ground in temporary discusssions.

Examination topics

At the first 7 meetings (March 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th; April 15th, 22nd and 29th) lectures reviewing the problem situations and the problems disussed are provided; readings weeks start with week 19 and terminate with week 24. In that period students will meet on an individual basis with me in order to discuss their reading and the structure of their talks. Reading weeks terminatre in week 24. The presentation of talks will start on June 17th.
