Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This course departs from multiple challenges that many developed countries currently face, i.e., high national debt, inflation, slow growth of output and productivity as well as population aging. Students learn to use various data sources for documenting such empirical facts. They are introduced to analytical tools commonly used by macroeconomists to study the origin of these challenges, understand how they relate to each other and their impact on economic well-being in the short- and long-run. Alternative macroeconomic policy measures for addressing them are discussed.STUDENTS ARE STRONGLY ADVISED TO TAKE THIS COURSE AND THE ASSOCIATED EXERCISE SESSION (UE APPLIED MACROECONOMICS) IN THE SAME SEMESTER.
Assessment and permitted materials
The final grade is exclusively based on 2 out of 3 quizzes (15% each), a midterm exam in presence on November 16, 2023 (30%), and a final exam on January 26, 2024 (40%). To pass, 50% of all possible points are required. All exams are closed-book, closed-notes. Students wishing to do so can opt for a make-up final which takes place in late February 2024. The result from the last exam taken counts towards the final grade.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Students need to obtain at least 50% of all possible points to pass this course. 50% - 64% implies a 4; 65% - 74% a 3; 75% - 84% a 2; 85% or above a 1.
Examination topics
All exams are based on the material covered in class – including in-class discussions – as well as all mandatory readings.
