Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course covers the core ideas and models of modern macroeconomics at the graduate level. We will discuss topics such as economic growth, investment, consumption, asset pricing, business cycles, money and nominal frictions, and labor markets. We will study different macroeconomic models and link them to relevant events, empirical evidence, and policy issues. We will also discuss the mathematical methods used in modern macro, such as static and dynamic optimization in continuous and discrete time, and differential and difference equations. Students taking this course will be able to rigorously analyse macroeconomic issues and policies in connection with economic growth, business cycles and labor markets. Lectures will take place on Wednesdays (11.30-13) and Thursdays (9.45-11.15). Accompanying tutorials will take place on Wednesdays from 18:30 - 20:00.

The course is taught on site.

STUDENTS ARE STRONGLY ADVISED TO TAKE THIS COURSE AND THE ASSOCIATED EXERCISE SESSION (UE APPLIED MACROECONOMICS) IN THE SAME SEMESTER.

Assessment and permitted materials

There will be a midterm and a final exam, covering the material discussed in the first and second half of the semester, respectively. Each of them accounts for 50% of the grade. The mid-term exam will take place on November 14th. The final exam will take place on January 30th. Students who take the midterm will be given the possibility of a make-up exam in early January. Students who take the final exam will be given the possibility of a make-up exam in late February. All exams are closed-book exams. No electronic devices of any kind will be allowed in the exams.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
