Aims, contents and method of the course

Learning outcomes: The module aims to encourage students to learn basic business vocabulary in Italian and develop written and oral skills in order to be able to communicate correctly in daily business situations in Italy. The subject-specific learning outcomes comply with the grammatical structures and specifications for level B1 according to CEFR (business communication).

Main content overview: The topics range from business conversations in Italian with partners and colleagues to typical situations on a business trip to Italy. Business conversations as well as presentations will be carried out by the students during the time in class.

Method: The lessons focus on a communicative approach to Italian (e.g. group work, dialogues, role-plays, presentations, etc.). The course and the exams are carried out on-site at Oskar-Morgenstern-Platz. One masterclass with Italian experts in economics will be carried out during the semester.

The course is worth 8 ECTS points. The expected workload at home is therefore approximately 6 hours a week.

Assessment and permitted materials

The final mark is made up of the following elements:
- three written tests → one test at the end of October (15% of the final mark) + one test at the end of November/beginning of December (20% of the final mark each) + one at the end of January (25% of the final mark each)
- one oral exam at the end of the semester → 25% of the final mark
- one presentation (on-site) during the semester or at the end of the semester → 10% of the final mark
- work during the semester (at home and during the lessons)→ 5% of the final mark

More information on the exact dates as well as on the contents of each exam is on Moodle.

The course and the exams are carried out on-site.

In case of a significant study impairment or the like, the students are required to perform alternative tasks.

There is no makeup exam.

Students are expected to complete their written and oral exams without additional resources (e.g. notes, AI tools, dictionaries, etc.). The use of AI tools (e.g. ChatGPT, DeepL, Google Translate, Yandex Translate) for the production of texts is only permitted if they are expressly requested by the lecturer.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

In order to be able to follow 'Italian Business Communication 1', it is recommended that students already understand, speak, and write Italian to A2 level at the beginning of the course.

Each test is assessed independently: The students can obtain 100 points at max. at the end of the semester.

Assessment criteria:
< 60%: 5
60-69%: 4 (pass)
70-79%: 3
80-89%: 2
90-100%: 1

Class attendance is mandatory (with up to max. 4 absences).

Examination topics

All contents which will be dealt with during the lessons and the homework are relevant for the exams.
