Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This course is aimed at Master level students. It provides a brief overview of empirical regularities that characterize economic growth around the world. The importance of growth for our economic well-being, challenges and limitations in a global environment are discussed together with the potential for particular policies to foster it. The main focus lies on systematically developing formal models that try to explain the empirical observations. The prototypical model of endogenous growth will be covered as well as more modern approaches exploring the role of R&D, patents, or the misallocation of resources for economic growth.
Assessment and permitted materials
There will be a midterm exam on December 13, 2019 (40%), exercises with solutions to be presented in class (20%), and an in-class presentation of a scientific article (30%). Active participation in discussions of any kind is expected (10%).
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
50 percent of all possible points are required for passing. The course language is English.
