The course consists of lectures (Monday and Tuesday) and exercises (Wednesday). It is planned to do the entire course with physical presence, but being physically present will not be necessary for a positive evaluation. The lectures will be recorded and the videos will be made available on Moodle. The exercises will be supported by an online tool such als Blackboard Collaborate. All assessment parts will be done as online tests or via electronic submission. In the event of a further tightening of the Covid-19 rules, a switch to a full online format can take place.

Every student will be allocated to one of the two exercise groups on Wednesdays. The students can express their preferences regarding the two groups on the Moodle page.

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims: Students become familiar with some basic empirical facts about economic growth and business cycles as well as with the most popular models used in modern macroeconomics to study these phenomena. They will be able to use and modify these models so as to formally analyze questions of macroeconomic relevance.
Contents: The course deals with advanced methods and models that are used to study economic growth and the business cycle including neoclassical and endogenous growth models, real business cycle models, and New Keynesian models.
Methods: The course material is first explained in a presentation by the lecturers. Weekly exercises help to get practice in using the presented theories and methods..

Assessment and permitted materials

Written midterm and final exam (40% each) and homework exercises (20%).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

For a positive grade one needs at least 50% of all points that can be earned.
