Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

History of economic policy from mercantilism to the present. Focus: historical and contemporary aspects of economic systems; economic doctrines and economic policy goals in the individual historical epochs and what is still relevant today; specific characteristics of economic policy in selected major economies; state economic policy in confrontation with global players; economic policy in the EU; social policy aspects; individual examples of economic and social policy in times of economic crisis.

Assessment and permitted materials

The lessons take place every week in the class room. There will be lectures by the lecturer and discussions with the students, supported by presentations on the individual epochs of the history of economics posted on ”Moodle”. Students are required to attend and prepare for each lesson. In addition, students are required to write a seminar paper (approx. 12 pages) on one of the epochs in consultation with the lecturer. I supervise their search for literature and the production of a "workshop version" (i.e. a first version of the seminar paper, which is to be expanded and improved by the students after my feedback) during the semester. Then the students complete the final version after discussing it with me by end of February 2024 at the latest.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course gives an overview at an intermediate level. The seminar paper should also be the starting point for learning how to organize research work technically. In general, the aim is to improve insight into the historical depth dimension of social and economic issues.

Examination topics

Preparation and participation in the weekly lessons of the course and writing the seminar paper.
