    Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course covers core ideas in modern macroeconomics, with a special focus on the long run. It relates different theories to relevant events, empirical evidence, and policy issues, and puts emphasis on some of the mathematical methods used in modern macro, such as dynamic optimisation. Students taking this course will be able to rigorously analyse macroeconomic issues and policies in connection with economic growth, fiscal policy, and investment.

The course is taught on site.

STUDENTS ARE STRONGLY ADVISED TO TAKE THIS COURSE, KU APPLIED MACROECONOMICS 2, AND THE ASSOCIATED EXERCISE SESSION (UE APPLIED MACROECONOMICS) IN THE SAME SEMESTER.

    Assessment and permitted materials

Evaluation is based on a final exam that covers all the material discussed in the course.

    Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

    Students need to obtain at least an average of 50% to pass this course. 50% - 59% implies a 4; 60% - 69% a 3; 70% - 84% a 2; 85% or above a 1.

    Examination topics

All exams are based on the material covered in class as well as all mandatory readings and the problem sets handed out during the course.

Topics: Solow model, dynamic optimisation, overlapping generations model, Ramsey model, endogenous growth, fundamental causes of long-run growth, investment

    Reading list

The course is strongly based on David Romer (2018): Advanced Macroeconomics, 5th Edition. A complete reading list will be provided in the course’s Moodle platform at the beginning of the semester.
