Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Students who have successfully completed the course are familiar with some key concepts and results on taxation and tax policy. After a general introduction into basic concepts and terminology, the course deals with optimal indirect taxation (Ramsey model), optimal labor income taxation (Mirrlees model), corrective taxation (externalities and Pigou taxes), and pension systems (fully funded vs. pay-as-you-go).

Methods: The course material will be presented in the form of lectures. Occasional homework assignments are used to complement the lectures.

Assessment and permitted materials

There will be occasional homework exercises and one or two tests during the semester (midterm plus final).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Participation in the test(s) is mandatory. At least 50% of the points for tests and final exam need to be earned for a positive grade. Additional points can be earned through homework exercises.

Examination topics

Defined by beamer presentation and handouts.

Reading list

A detailed syllabus will be published on Moodle.
