Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Students who have successfully completed the course are familiar with some key concepts and results on taxation and tax policy. After a general introduction into basic concepts and terminology, the course deals with optimal indirect taxation (Ramsey model), optimal labor income taxation (Mirrlees model), corrective taxation (externalities and Pigou taxes), and pension systems (fully funded vs. pay-as-you-go).

Methods: The course material will be presented in the form of lectures. Homework assignments are used to complement the lectures.

Assessment and permitted materials

There will be two homework exercises and two tests. The tests will have open book format.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

For each homework exercise students can earn 10 points, for each test 25 points. To obtain a positive grade, it is necessary to earn at least 25 points on both test together and at least 35 points in total (both homework exercises plus both tests). Oral presentations of solutions to homework exercises and classroom participation yield extra points.

Examination topics

Defined by beamer presentation and handouts.

Reading list

A detailed syllabus will be published on Moodle.
