Aims, contents and method of the course

What are the central causes and consequences of economic inequality? Does income inequality necessarily imply unequal consumption opportunities, or welfare loss? This course presents alternative concepts of measuring inequality with empirical facts from selected countries. It introduces students to a rigorous study of inequality and how it relates to growth, business cycles, or earnings, income, and wealth. This includes using the software package 'R' to analyze micro data from the US Survey of Consumer Finances. Students learn the tools necessary to critically, but constructively reflect on the topic and to formulate policy recommendations.

Assessment and permitted materials

The course language is English. The final grade will be based exclusively on (i) two empirical group projects (20% each), (ii) 5 problem sets (3% each), and a final exam on June 27 (45%), 2024. Passing requires 50 percent of all possible points.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Fifty percent of all possible points are required for passing this course. 50% - 60% implies a 4; 60% - 70% a 3; 70% - 85% a 2; 85% or above a 1.

Examination topics

All topics covered in class or in the required reading material as well as all exercises are relevant for the exams.
