Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course is designed - in addition to individual discussions - to help you present and discuss your master's thesis with other students writing their master's thesis.
Teaching languages: English
1. You will only be admitted to the Master-KV if you have already registered a master thesis. Please send a copy of the registration to veronika.moser@univie.ac.at.
If you are writing your master thesis in another department, we kindly ask you to register at the master thesis conversation of Mrs. Michaela Schaffhauser-Linzatti.
In general, if you are supervised by someone other than us, please send your disposition to your supervisor as well, she will also receive all feedback and MUST be present at the presentation. Otherwise, your CT cannot be evaluated.
2. Regardless of admission, please send Ms. Veronika Moser (veronika.moser@univie.ac.at) by 2.3.2023, 12 noon:
- Surname
- First name
- Student number
- Email
- Title of the work
- Date of approval of the work
- Supervision, if necessary co-supervision

This data will be collected and put into an Excel spreadsheet in Moodle. Your privacy approval is assumed (otherwise, please contact Ms. Moser).
3. For all submissions, paper and/or electronic, please always write course, name, email and date on the document.
4. In the first unit, there will be a short introduction to CT and our presentation of master's theses.
5. You will upload your disposition in Word format on Moodle to the appropriate folders by 26.03.2023.

The disposition including the outline includes
a) At least 5 pages of text
b) Table of contents (preliminary structure of the paper)
c) Problem statement and motivation (based on relevant, relevant academic literature)
d) Research question
e) Methodological approach (focus!, design, sample, tests, ....)
f) Bibliography of at least ¾ page.
If you are already advanced, please upload or submit what is already available.

7. Dates
a) See "Important dates of the course schedule".
b) Preparation for the 1st presentation: upload Power Point slides 1 week before presentation; presentation dates and discussants will be assigned.
c) Procedure for 1st presentation: content of slides - progress of work, as far as you are. You have to present more than your disposition in any case; by this date, if you started from zero, you should have 1/2 of the work in any case, otherwise more (remember, the master thesis should be written in ECTS terms in 6 months). The progress will be included in the grade.
d) Preparation for the 2nd presentation: Power Point slides as well as the actual paper, which has to be at least 20 - 30 pages long, have to be uploaded 1 week before the presentation; dates and discussants will be assigned.
e) Procedure of the 2nd presentation: The work is to be presented; the progress (in relation to the 1st presentation) is included in the grade. At least one discussant will discuss the progress of your work based on the submitted work in the Word document.
8. Absences: you may be absent for a maximum of 2 hours after consultation with the course instructors, otherwise negative evaluation; deregister if you are seriously unable to attend.

Assessment and permitted materials

Grading
a) Submission of the disposition and its quality: 10%.
b) 1st presentation 20%; oral discussion feedback for (at least) one other seminar participant on his/her submitted written presentation 10% (basis of discussion is the presented work of the seminar participant in Power Point format)
c) 2nd presentation 30%; written and oral discussion feedback for (at least) one other seminar participant on his/her submitted written work at 30% (basis of discussion is the seminar participant's work of at least 20 - 30 pages submitted in Word)
d) Each late submission or unexcused absence = 1 grade worse

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Grading scheme: up to 49.0% Unsatisfactory, 49.5%-62.5% Satisfactory, 63.0%-75.0% Satisfactory, 75.5%-87.5% Good, 88.0%-100% Very Good.
