Aims, contents and method of the course

Can an economy grow indefinitely even if its fossil energy resources are limited in supply? At the same time, if burning of fossil fuels causes climate change, how can we achieve growth and sustainable development? This course will shed light on answers to such questions through the lens of neoclassical growth models which include pollution dynamics and effects of climate change. We will start by learning and reviewing the dynamic optimization methods which is a standard technique for analyzing such models. We will proceed by introducing the standard growth and pollution model, i.e. the Dasgupta-Heal-Sollow-Stiglitz model, and subsequently look at different variants and extensions. We will examine the role of input substitution, technical change, and switch to renewables. We will also discuss policy implications and current developments in environmental regulation in various countries.

Assessment and permitted materials

The final grade is composed of the results of the midterm assessment (30%), a presentation on the topic of your choice in a group (20%), and the final assessment (50%). A passing grade at the final assessment is required to pass the course.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Midterm is a written assessment, duration 90 minutes. Presentation is oral, in a group. Final assessment is written, duration 90 minutes. It is advisable that students have taken “Resource and Environmental Economics” course before enrolling in this course. Advanced economics Master and PhD students, who have already successfully completed Macro & Micro, will be able to follow the material without having taken “Resource and Environmental Economics”. Knowledge of mathematics for economists is expected.
