Assessment and permitted materials

C. Evaluation: 100 points
1. Seminar paper: 60 points
2. Presentation: 20 points
3. Class participation / discussion: 20 points

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The goal of the seminar is to enable students to work with academic literature, particularly, on international strategy and organization of the firms. By the end of the seminar, the students are expected to have learned theoretical concepts in this area and their application to the international business environment.

Examination topics

A. Research Paper: Each student has to write and present a seminar paper on one of the below mentioned topics. The students are expected to look into the latest literature (last 5-10 years) on the relevant topic.
1. The essence of the seminar paper should be
i. to summarize the literature
ii. to discuss the practical implications of different theoretical concepts for international firms
iii. and to identify possible research extensions.
2. The length of the seminar paper (excluding table of contents, references, and appendices) should be around 15 pages.
3. Submit the seminar paper to Dr. Hussain (by email) and upload on the e-learning platform latest by April 20, 2012.
4. Submit one hard copy of the seminar paper to the secretary of the Chair of Organization and Planning (room 3/153) along with a CD containing literature used in the seminar paper latest by April 25, 2012. Please label the CD with your name and topic.

B. Presentation: All students are required to present their papers in the class.
1. Time for presentation: 40 minutes (presentation 25-30 minutes, discussion 10-15 minutes).
2. Please use PowerPoint for presentations, no overhead projector will be provided.
3. The presenters are expected to engage the fellow students in an “informed discussion” after the presentation.

E. Literature: Latest literature on all topics for seminar papers can be searched from online databases (ABI/INFORM, JSTOR, Sciencedirect, etc.) on https://dbs.univie.ac.at/. Some of the relevant journals are: Journal of International Business Studies, Strategic Management Journal, Organization Studies, Journal of International Management, International Business Review, Management International Review, Journal of World Business, etc.
