Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Industrial Organization studies the interaction of firms and consumers in markets that are characterized by imperfect competition. We will explore the sources and consequences of market power. The course will cover topics in monopoly, price discrimination, static and dynamic oligopoly models, cartel behavior, product differentiation, and strategic entry deterrence. Each topic will be supplemented by case studies and problem sets.
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of microeconomics and game theory.

Assessment and permitted materials

Attendance is compulsory. If you miss class for more than three times, you will need a valid excuse. The final grade will be calculated as follows: Midterm Exam (30%), Final Exam (40%), Case Study (30%).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students should master the main workhorse models of modern IO and develop an analytical approach to everyday-life phenomena of monopoly and oligopoly behavior.
