Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course builds upon the fundamental principles covered in Foundations of Computer Graphics (05-2200) and introduces students to advanced topics in computer graphics. This particular course focuses on image synthesis, i.e. the creation of photo-realistic images. Specific topics include:
* review of basics
* advanced ray tracing
* radiometry / photometry
* image pipeline
* reflectance functions
* Monte-Carlo methods
* photon maps
* radiosity
* participating media

Students are enabled to:
* analyse and solve the rendering equation using sophisticated mathematical and statistical methods
* extend a large code base (in C++) and learn how to debug such a system
* analyse and improve rendering algorithms based on efficiency of ray
intersections
* tell apart biased and convergent behaviour of a rendering algorithm

Students gain:
* deep insight into the art and science of physically-based rendering
* an appreciation for applied statistics and applied numerical mathematics
* experience with a production quality rendering system (pbrt)

Assessment and permitted materials

4xAssignments: 50%
Final Exam: 50%

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

A mandatory prerequisite for this class is the successful completion of Foundations of Computer Graphics (05-2200).

The grading scale for the course will be:
1: at least 87.5%
2: at least 75.0%
3: at least 60.0%
4: at least 40.0%

A minimum grade of 25% must be earned on each assignment (without considering penalties) in order to pass the course.

Examination topics

* applied exercises and tasks
* accomplishing a final project
* in-class presentations
* readings
