Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Students understand the theoretical and practical mechanisms (concepts, methods, techniques and tools) of data management, web technologies and basic security mechanisms to design, realize and use web-based information systems.

This course introduces students to the following topics:
- Data Engineering (Parallel and distributed DBMS, Object-relational and OO DBMS, Semi-structured modelling, NoSQL DBMS)
- Web Engineering (Virtualization, Containertechnology, Cloudcomputing)
- Security Engineering (Basic security services, Encryption, Security protocols)

The course consists of two parts, one part focusing on the concepts (Part A) and a practical part focusing on the implementations of an information system based on the concepts introduced (Part B).

Assessment and permitted materials

A maximum of 30 points can be achieved in Part A and a maximum of 70 points in Part B. The final grade of the course is the sum of the two parts (i.e. maximum achievable total number of points relevant to the grade = 100).

There are 5 performance assessments:
- Part A: two written tests/examinations on the conceptual part A (no aids are permitted): 15 points each
- Part B: Information System (IS) specification: max. 20 points
- Part B: IS development with relational DBMS: max. 25 points
- Part B: IS migration to NoSQL DBMS: max. 25 points.

In addition, bonus points of max. 12 points can be achieved in the context of short (max. 10 minutes) performance assessments (quizzes) at the beginning of individual lectures.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The following conditions must be met for a positive result:

- At least 50 % of the maximum achievable points overall from the two tests for Part A must be achieved.
- At least 50 % of the maximum achievable points overall from Part B must be achieved.
- The final presentation showcasing the solutions developed for Part B using slides is mandatory.

The grade results from the total number of points achieved (including bonus points) according to the following key:

89% <= P <= 100% Sehr Gut (1)
76% <= P < 89% Gut (2)
63% <= P < 76% Befriedigend (3)
50% <= P < 63% Genügend (4)
0% <= P < 50% Nicht Genügend (5)
