Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The automation of business processes, also known as workflows, is enabled by workflow management systems (WfMS) or process-aware information systems (PAIS). They have become the thriving source of change in the course of workflow-enabled digitalization.

The goals of this course is to:
* Introduction and familiarization of concepts of workflow systems and technologies
* Application and development of workflow systems

The content of the course consists of:
• Basic concepts of WfMS and PAIS
• Process orchestrations
• Properties of business processes
• Development of workflow-driven applications
• Workflow execution and web services

Students, attending the course, are expected to have knowledge in the following topics:
* Business process modeling foundations
* Advanced knowledge in the business process modeling notation (BPMN)
* Basic knowledge of XML, JSON
* Basic knowledge of service-oriented architectures (SOA)
* Advanced knowledge on REST and implementation of REST web services is highly recommended
* Advanced knowledge in at least one programming language of your choice (e.g. Javascript, Ruby, Python, ...) recommended
(Demonstrations for the exercises will be mostly in PHP and Javascript)

Assessment and permitted materials

‣ practical and theoretical exercises
‣ written exam

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

‣ Part A: 60% exercises (theoretical and practical)
‣ Part B: 40% written exam

Overall at least 50% of points need to be achieved.

The grade is calculated from the total points as follows:
>= 87,5% very good (1)
>= 75% good (2)
>= 62,5% satisfactory (3)
>= 50% sufficient (4)
< 50% not sufficient (5)
