Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In the core combinations module "Semantic Technologies", the goal is to research and facilitate innovation in the digital transformation age. A model-based approach is employed to conceptualize, implement, and deploy semantic information systems. Thereby, individuals or teams develop semantic information systems while exploring the potential of "smart" models.

In the summer term, the necessary foundations are laid out and concepts for semantic information systems in the digital transformation age are created. In the winter term, semantic information systems are developed.

In the winter term, students acquire skills to:
* Specify technical architectures
* Implement and deploy semantic information systems that combine elements from modelling, knowledge engineering, and intelligent environments
* Apply validation methods in laboratory environments

Assessment and permitted materials

Individual or team-based realization of projects in the areas of semantic information systems. The projects are evaluated based on three assessments.

Part A: Written Report (50 %)
The specification of a modelling language, the implementation of mechanisms and algorithms, and the presentation and documentation of the project will be evaluated.
The submissions have to be made electronically via the e-learning platform.
The written report including the produced software will be evaluated.
Evaluation mode: Team

Part B: Written Exam (20 %)
The theoretical part of the course will be examined in a written test.
Evaluation mode: Individual

Part C: Oral Exam (30 %)
An oral examination of each student will take place at the end of the semester covering the content of the whole course, see section “Prüfungsstoff”/”Examination topics”

Attendance is mandatory.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

For a positive evaluation of the course, more or equal to 50% of requirements have to be fulfilled. The grading scale is defined as follows: >50% - 62,5%: Genügend; >62,5% - 75%: Befriedigend; >75% - 87,5%: Gut; >87,5%: Sehr Gut

Examination topics

The examination via the three required submissions is based on topics from this course, from the preceding course of this core combinations module, and from the gatekeeper module "Knowledge Engineering". Additionally, skills and knowledge from the module "Metamodelling" are required.

Reading list
