First meeting/Vorbesprechung (jointly with VU Algorithmische Bioinformatik): Online meeting March 1, 10:00. Participation in the first meeting is mandatory. If subscribed, please enter the first meeting though the Moodle course. Otherwise, please enter through https://moodle.univie.ac.at/mod/bigbluebuttonbn/guestlink.php?gid=7umeQbRVKAnr

The lecture consists of three parts:

1. Structural bioinformatics (Bojan Zagrovic)
This part of the lecture is scheduled as a one-week course from Mar 28-Apr 1 (every day 9-12 and 13-17). It is identical with the first week of 301232 VO Computergestuetzte Strukturelle Biologie and 301236 UE UE zur Computergestuetzten strukturellen Biologie. It is highly recommended to also attend the second week of this VO and UE (also every day 9-12 and 13-17), which is credited separately with 3 ECTS and held from Apr 4-8.

2. Sequence bioinformatics I (Thomas Rattei)
Lectures/exercises are scheduled on 4 dates (to be fixed in the first meeting)

3. Sequence bioinformatics II (Ivo Hofacker)
Lectures/exercises are scheduled on 4 dates (to be fixed in the first meeting)

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The students are able to explain typical questions and methods of sequence and structure analysis and can design experiments using these methods.
The students are able to compare sequence and structural data with biological databases.
The students understand basic methods and algorithms of sequence based predictions and predictions of molecular structures. The students are able to apply these to solve typical problems in biology and medicine and can interpret the results.

Assessment and permitted materials

Solution of homework exercises.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Successful submissions of problem solutions in structural bioinformatics, sequence and genome analysis and RNA bioinformatics.

Examination topics

Structural bioinformatics
Sequence and genome analysis
RNA bioinformatics
