Aims, contents and method of the course

Even during his life Herod the Great was a highly controversial figure. As a Roman clientel king he led Judah to new hights but Romanized it as well. Many of his subjects perceived him as a cruel tyrant. Another aspect of his rule though is the cultural splendor and economic wealth of his time. This lecture class will describe and interpret Herod's reign In its historical contexts.

Assessment and permitted materials

An essay of 2500 words. The topics of the essays will be specified on Moodle.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Detailed knowledge about Herod the Great and Judea before, during and after his time as well as his reception.

Examination topics

The history, culture and religion of Judea before, during and after the time Herod the Great, his policies and his reception.
