Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

At the end of 2014, 103 Cuneiform tablets were published, which document Jewish life in Mesopotamia in 6th and early 5th centuries BCE. The tablets are legal documents out of three small cities into which Nebukadnezzar exiled Jews after he conquered Jerusalem two times. The evidence of the new published cuneiform tablets will be supplemented by the Murashu archive and several smaller sources. Taken together these documents allow for the first time to draw a picture of Jewish life in Mesopotamia. The cuneiform sources will be studied in the context of biblical sources which they will help to understand from a new perspective in turn. Biblical texts will be read in Hebrew but cuneiform texts in English translation.
