Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course is meant as an introduction to the history of the longest conflict in the Middle East region – presenting the historical and ideological background of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as seen from the changing narratives of Israelis and Palestinians.
During the classes, we will try to uncover this complicated historical process by analyzing the most important historical source texts.

Topics to be discussed include but are not restricted to the following:
the birth of the Zionist movement, its emergence in the Middle East and the responses of the Palestinian Arab community to it;
the formation of the Arab national movement as a whole—and within this, the claims of Palestinians before and after the British Mandate;
the founding of the state of Israel and the formation of the post-1948 Palestinian national movement;
the aftermath of the 1967 war; the start of the Israeli occupation, and the latter’s impact on Israeli society;
the formation of the Palestine Liberation Organization and the founding of Hamas;
the Oslo peace process, its failures, and the subsequent Palestinian uprisings (the intifadas);
